What If’s

We get caught up in the “What Ifs”.

What if I don’t succeed? What if I don’t get the job? What if he/she leaves me? What if they hate me? These “What Ifs” cause us to experience a lot of generalized anxiety as we become so consumed with the endless array of possibilities.

What if, What if, What if.

What if we focused on today?

Though many of us are reluctant to acknowledge it, we cannot control all aspects of our future. There are so many factors at play in our lives it’s hard for us to have absolute accuracy when we envision what’s to come.

We do; however, have control over our behavior today.

So what can we do when worry takes over? How can we calm the roaring anxiety that overwhelms us? There are a plethora of strategies advertised in media that are offered as solutions to these wandering thoughts, so which avenue reaps the most success?

When it comes to emotions, it’s hard to determine a singular solution because all individuals experience circumstances differently. So differently, in fact, that two people can be involved in the same incident and have entirely opposite emotional reactions.

That being said, when it comes to calming the anxiety experienced by “What Ifs” it’s all about trial and error; figuring out which tactic works best for your specific needs.

Some possible options for relieving the pressure of “What Ifs” include practicing mindfulness, exercise, and journaling.

These; however, won’t necessarily be effective for everyone, so be sure to do your research and talk to your counselor about some possible approaches for conquering your “What If” anxiety.

Don’t give the “What Ifs” control over your life and your mental health.

It’s time you take back the reigns.

What “What Ifs” dominate your mind? Have you found any beneficial tactics when it comes to calming these anxious thoughts?
